How the Moon is worked out

From the date and time we compute where the Moon stood against the Sun at that moment: how much of it was lit, whether it was growing or shrinking, how far away it was and which constellation it stood in front of. The phase dates, the full Moons and the sign come from the same calculation.

The Moon itself is NASA's: the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter's photographs of the near side, lit for that night's phase the way sunlight falls on the real thing. It is shown as seen from India, so a waxing Moon is lit on its right.

Without a time we use 9 pm. Without a place we read the time on India's clock.

Shipping in India

Prints are made in 3–5 working days and then shipped by tracked courier, usually 5–8 days to most pin codes. Shipping is free above ₹1,999.

Mistakes and damage

If a print arrives damaged, or something on it is our mistake, we reprint it free. As each poster is made for one person we can’t accept returns for a change of mind, so please check the name and date before you pay.

The idea

One Moon, one orbit, one date

The Moon alone in deep space, circled by a thin orbit that passes behind it and comes round in front. The date sits where the orbit crosses, and the name is set in wide capitals underneath.

Every Moon poster shows the same Moon for the same night: the real one, at its real phase, from NASA's photographs. What changes is what is set around it.
